My Journey as a Freshman Student in China
Nine months ago, I boarded a flight from the US with excitement, nervousness and a suitcase full of hopes. I was about to begin my university life in China — a place that feels both new and familiar. Unlike many international students, I wasn't starting from scratch; I had already lived here prior and was fairly comfortable with the language and culture. This familiarity gave me a head start allowing me to focus more on settling into university life rather than adjusting to an entirely new environment.
Even so, stepping into university as a freshman brought its own set of challenges and opportunities. The academic pressure, independence, and social dynamics were a shift from anything I’d experienced before. But thanks to my earlier time in China, I could quickly find my rhythm, connect with classmates, and navigate life on and off campus with ease.
What I’ve enjoyed the most so far is how this phase of my life blends the comfort of a place I already know with the excitement of starting something new. Being able to communicate easily in Chinese opened doors to deeper conversations, authentic friendships, and experiences that some of my peers are still working their way toward.
With three more years ahead, I’m excited to dive deeper into my field of study, continue building meaningful relationships, and make the most of this journey. Studying in China feels less like being far from home and more like coming full circle — with the added adventure of growing into the person I’m meant to become.
