Studying abroad has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. My name is Jared Ombasa Barongo, a Kenyan student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Aircraft Maintenance at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) in China. . China’s rapid development in aerospace technology made it a natural choice, and NUAA stood out for its academic reputation. Transitioning to life in Nanjing was both exciting and challenging. Everything—from the language and culture to daily routines—was different from what I was used to. Learning Mandarin and earning an HSK 3 certification helped me integrate better, both socially and academically. NUAA’s academic environment is rigorous but rewarding, with practical lab sessions, team projects, and courses that push you to think critically. Outside the classroom, I’ve immersed myself in Chinese culture, made friends from all over the world, and taken on leadership roles, including serving as Organizing Secretary for Kenyan students in China and running for the student presidency representing internationals.

My time in China has not only sharpened my technical knowledge but also helped me grow personally. I’ve learned resilience, independence, and cultural awareness—skills that will serve me well beyond the classroom. Being in a new country pushed me out of my comfort zone, and in doing so, helped me become more open-minded and adaptable. I’ve enjoyed exploring local festivals, trying new foods, and building meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds. For students considering studying in China, I highly recommend learning some basic Mandarin before arrival, being open to new experiences, and actively participating in student communities. Life abroad comes with its own set of challenges, but with the right mindset, it becomes a life-changing journey. As I continue my studies at NUAA, I look forward to future opportunities in aviation and engineering.
